These are great robots. Irobot has done the world of robotics a fantastic service by making these units available. Ten years ago, one might spend > 10K to get this functionality. Now, they are a little over [$]. The only drawback is that you really need to add a processor to do advanced research. Fortunately the Gumstix product will interface nicely, and you can always add a wireless web cam if you need vision.

This is a Great way to get into robotics without having to design a drive system, wheel encoders, bumpers, wheel-drop sensors, cliff sensors, a wall sensor, infrared communications, the ability to dock, charge, and undock unattended, and a microcontroller to make it all work together. I don't believe it's possible to build a basic robot with all of the features of the iRobot Create for less money. I'm about to purchase my Third. The iRobot Create takes care of the basic hardware development and leaves the developer free to add sensors and write programs without spending many hours and lots of money just trying to build something that moves around reliably before even thinking about sensors (the fun part to me).

I bought the premium package with the APS battery, dock, command module, and remote. It has provided me countless hours of fun programming the Create to perform various tasks and watch it wander around the house. For the low price, I don't think you can find a better starter robotics platform. It's also a great way for programmers to learn embedded systems.

At a minimum I recommend the APS battery and command module. If you've got the money, the premium package is the way to go.
