Comments about iRobot Scooba® 230 + Essentials Kit:

The machine works well enough for cleaing the bathroom and kitchen, but not as well as the Roomba I also own. The major advantage is that it can get into small spaces. The battery life is not as long as the bigger machines, but it is sufficient. My complaint is with service. My Scooba stopped working within the warranty period. I called service, which kept misdiagnosing the problem, even though I repeatedly suggested that it was the battery. I ended up having to exchange the charger, robot, and finally received a new battery, which was indeed the problem. This meant a lot of phone calls and e-mails, as well as a month of not having the use of the Scooba. With a new battery, it now works fine. I-Robot should listen to the customer, the end user, in diagnosing problems.

Comments about iRobot Scooba® 230 + Essentials Kit:

I bought this with much anticipation in 2011. It has served me well through several cleanings since then. I was really impressed! But, when it became a problem, there is very little that can be done to make it work! I understand the need for a waterproof seal. It would be nice to change parts so I could fix it myself. My only chaoice is to buy a new one. But, with the other reviews, it is like the roll of the dice!

Comments about iRobot Scooba® 230 + Essentials Kit:

I have a Roomba that have been using it every single day for the past 2-3 years without a fail. But this model of Scooba lacks reliability, I have replaced it twice before and yet the latest one broke again with a leaky water bladder.
While iRobot has been promptly replacing them, for me is no more worth the cost of shipping it back and making the trip to post office.

Comments about iRobot Scooba® 230 + Essentials Kit:

I have a Roomba that I love, so was so excited to get the Scooba. At first, I was thrilled with how it worked. Did a very good job on all our floors. I hate cleaning floors so was happy to have Scooba working while I was doing something else. However, within several weeks the bumper stopped working and Tech Support determined that I needed a whole new unit. I assumed it was a "lemon", but eagerly awaited my replacement. I received the replacement two weeks later, only to find that right out of the box the wheels wouldn't move. Another call to tech support revealed that they would have to send me yet another one. Having lost all faith in this product I requested a refund instead, Really disappointed it didn't hold up.

Comments about iRobot Scooba® 230 + Essentials Kit:

Usage: small rooms, including bathroom and hardwood bedroom.

I live in Milano, Italy, and my house is not so big.

I own both a 380 scooba and now a smaller 230.
I can say the 230 is better than the 380 for smaller houses.

- in smaller spaces, no comparison: the smaller one is more agile and fast. It cleans places the bigger one wouldn't even dream of going to.

- it is true that, compared to the bigger one, the small one doesn't scrub dirt, but not even the big one _really_ scrubs and I see that the roomba+small_scooba combination is however better rooma+big_scooba combo

- the small one does NOT get stuck in its own water. The big one DOES. At least this is the behavior of my two.

in the end: 230>380.

I wish I could try the NEW big scooba. chances are it's better than the old 380, which is very bad.

Comments about iRobot Scooba® 230 + Essentials Kit:

I purchased my Scooba 230 in April of this year from a brick and mortar store. I had read several reviews before my purchase, so I wasn't surprised by the lack-luster performance. However, I've ran the robot through a total of approximately twelve 40 minute cleaning cycles. Today, I went to fill the robot with water and discovered the active bladder has a hole in it. It is now effectively useless. I'm very dissatisfied that this robot died after less than 60 days.

Comments about iRobot Scooba® 230 + Essentials Kit:

After cleaning my kitchen and bathroom floors once thoroughly with a mop, I have found that this product does a great job in maintaining that clean state. In fact I haven't used the mop since that first time. I also have a roomba and I alternate letting the roomba vacuum the kitchen/livingroom and bedroom/bathroom with the scooba. I turn them on before I leave; it's wonderful coming back to freshly cleaned carpets and floors.

I will concede that the unit is not a perfect cleaner, and will occasionally miss areas or leave small puddles that dry to show dirt, but on average though out the week it manages to keep the entire floor clean. Now if only they could invent one that would clean my counters...

In summary, yes you can do a better job if you really want to get down and scrub the floor yourself, but if your floor is already mostly clean, this will do a great job maintaining that clean state.

Comments about iRobot Scooba® 230 + Essentials Kit:

I own 3 Roombas, 2 dirt dogs, and an older (the larger) Scuba. In addition I have previously owned three other Roombas -- ALL (expect for the discovery) of which I think are great.

The new Scooba is awful. It never drove in a straight line. After about two uses (after the 30 day warranty) it started just spinning in circles. It takes too long to charge. It does not clean anywhere near as good as the old scuba.

I purchase it with the hope that it would get into smaller spaces around the pedastal sinks and toilets, but it now won't even move out of place. Absolutely no help from iRobot when I called/contacted them despite the fact that I am a loyal customer and purchase hundreds of dollars of supplies and typical 1+_ new robot per year. AVOID this product and buy the old Scooba.

Comments about iRobot Scooba® 230 + Essentials Kit:

            Pros:
            Great engineering and design
            Almost perfect maintenance robot
Small enough to clean bathrooms very well, and sanitize them when using the enzyme cleaning solution
Short cleaning cycle option lets you do 2 short cleanings on a charge or 1 long cleaning
Wall following works very well, and is great for staying very close around the toilet and other bathroom fixtures
Robot will still clean well with just tap water
Modular design puts all cleaning components in 1 removable and replaceable bottom plate; wheels are also easy to clean/replace
Both tanks are easy to empty and fill

            Cons:
No stand alone charger to allow the use of additional batteries
Can only follow walls going counter-clockwise
Can get confused and keep cleaning the same area in certain scenarios while neglecting others, largely due to the counter-clockwise only wall following and turning around when encountering a virtual wall
Should be able to follow virtual walls instead of turning around when it encounters them
No LED on the robot indicates charge status. Charge status is only on the wall power adapter's LED which means you cannot plug it into an outlet that's out of view

Overall this is a great robot, and fits the smaller room niche it's intended for very well. I would give it 4 stars if it weren't for the lack of an additional charger available. The other star is lost by the virtual wall issues, which I will elaborate on below. Actual cleaning ability gets 5 stars in my opinion. I would guess the cleaning performance of a 3xx series Scooba may be better, but to me this robot cleans very well for its small size and intention when used properly. This is my first cleaning robot and I am overall quite impressed by the technology and performance.

The biggest drawback of all is that there is not an additional charger base available. The battery life is fairly short compared to charge time, so you really only get to run it 1 or 2 times before it must charge for 4-6 hours. This problem could quite feasibly be solved by making a charger for additional batteries so you could swap in a charged battery when the previous one is exhausted. An external charger should be able to use the same adapter that the robot uses, and should also have a charge status LED on the charger itself. It would be great to have an audible indicator of fully charged on the charger and robot, or just have the green "checkbox" LED on the robot stay on when the battery is charged.

By design, this robot may not be able to clean deep recessed grout areas of floors with tiles well or much at all, and dirt could be left uncleaned in the grout area. This problem might be able to be remedied by a deep mopping first. With flat floors, I was able to get away without having to mop before starting to use the robot for the first time, though it left dust clumps all over for the first few cleanings.

A big improvement in the next revision or successor would be dual forward-facing sensors (currently just one on the right hand side) to 1: hopefully be able to judge virtual wall beam intensity in visual stereo to be able to follow the virtual walls and 2: to be able to do its wall following routine clockwise as well. A diagram of the cleaning pattern in the manual actually shows it doing clockwise wall following, which it does not do. When encountering a virtual wall, the robot usually does a few spot cleanings before it turns 180 degrees in the opposite direction and does the room crossing routine. The robot wastes a lot of time with this behavior and ends up repeatedly going back to the same areas, thus neglecting others. This is most apparent when you redefine room dimensions by creating a square with 2 of the walls being virtual. The ability to follow the virtual walls as well as it follows real walls would have been a great feature, and one I expected from them being called virtual "walls". It would also be nice for virtual walls to have a button that would project a laser to show exactly where their beam is covering. To maximize the cleaning effectiveness of larger rooms, you really need to segment them, and it would be nice to not have to estimate where the coverage of the virtual wall actually is. Also, the effective distance of the halo emitter of the virtual wall is not documented in the manual. These issues only really present themselves in larger rooms where virtual walls must be used. Cleaning of small rooms is excellent, and the virtual wall issues are not very apparent when using it as a barrier for doorway or entryway.

The wall sensor IR transmitter/receiver pair is supposedly also a firmware update port, so it would be nice to see a software update to improve the logic of dealing with virtual walls. I'm curious about how an end user would be able to perform an update, though, unless they have a laptop with an IR port. A firmware update should also be able to make one of the robot's LED's match the charger's adapter LED to indicate charge status.

Perhaps wheels with a different rubber compound will be offered in the future to address issues some people have reported of the robot slipping a lot on slick tile. It's great that they are modular and could be swapped out in a matter of seconds. This was never an issue for me and I have used the robot on linoleum, tile, and sealed wood floors.

            User tips:
-Make sure to clean the bottom plate well between cleanings, including getting all dust out of the brushes, residue under the squeegy, and any debris out of the squeegy and its vacuum holes. A carefully used unfolded paper clip is great for clearing the holes.
-Make sure to open both the fill and empty ports when filling or emptying the robot.
-If the floor has gotten quite dirty since the last cleaning, sweep or use a swiffer to get the the hair, debris, and dust clumps up before running the robot.
-Use the virtual walls to segment large (or very dirty) rooms into smaller sections, especially locking the robot into high traffic areas that you know will be more dirty.
-If a physical barrier can be used instead of a virtual wall, you will get better performance vs cleaning time spent. This is very apparent when trying to use the virtual wall to define room dimensions and not just block off a small opening like a doorway.
-If you're seeing little dust clumps left behind after a cleaning, your floor is very dirty (the emptied water is probably dark gray too). Remember, this is intended as a maintenance robot. That being said, if you clean up the clumps and run it another time or two on the long cycle and monitor how dirty the emptied water is, you should have a clean floor in just a few runs. After that, the robot is able to maintain the clean level in a room very well.
-As you can read in the below review, it may be necessary to modify the robot a little to keep it from getting stuck under the edge of cabinets or appliances if their height is about the same as the robot's.
